Tuning my GK all shunt list part 3.1 Necron Allies

So, the first allies I am considering for my GK allies are Necrons.  GK/Necron lists seem to do pretty well in tournaments.  On the other hand, even though the fluff might support it, I really have a hard time with accepting that Grey Knights would work with Necrons.

Assuming that my Grey Knights would work with Necrons, the next question to answer is, do Necrons add anything to this specific list?

While there are a lot of possible Necron ally lists, the biggest gap in my Shunt list is anti-air, and Necron is the only army that lets me take 3 discrete aircraft.  I can take 2 units of warriors, each with Night Scythe, and then a Doom Scythe.

This would give me 2 more scoring units, 3 flyers that can act independently, for both AA and Ground support.

Despite my feelings about Necrons working with Grey Knights, this does fill a hole in the list.  On the other hand, I can take a Stormraven for 205 points, with 4 missiles (although 90% they suck, I have sniped HQ with them), a TL assault cannon, and a Multi-Melta.

The Night Scythes are costing me about 195 (65 for the unit + 100 for the Scythe + 30 for 1/3 of the overlord) each, for basically 2 autocannons and 2 scoring units who won't die if the plane blows up.

I already have access to cheap troops, and 10 points is worth a MM, rending, and an extra point of armor (and I save myself the money of buying 3 Necron fliers), so I probably won't go with this incarnation of Necron allies, although I want to note that even though I don't think these Necrons bring anything to my list, they don't take anything away either - I think this would be a pretty competitive list, if I already had some Necrons, and wanted to branch into Grey Knights.

GK vs Necron, 2000 points

Played a game against my normal Necron opponent.  It was 2000 points, Big Guns Never Tire, Vanguard Deployment.  This is the first time I have played Grey Knights since 6th edition, and I wanted to try Paladins (which I have never used before).  My list was:
Draigo
10 Paladins with Apothecary, 4 Master Crafted Psycannons, 3 hammers, 2 swords, every one else had a Halberd.
2 units of Strike Squads (10 Men) with 2 Psycannons, 2 Hammers, Justicar with Halberd and psybolt ammo
2 Dread Knights, with Teleporters and Heavy Incinerators.

The Necrons (from memory) had
Immotek
Necron Over Lord
6 Crypteks (4 with Abyssal Staffs, 2 with timestop?(lets you re-roll 1 die every phase)
3 units of warriors (I think 20, 10 and 10)
A Bastion with Quad Gun
2 Flyer Transports
2 Flyers with Death Ray
2 units of Death Marks

I combat squaded the Strike Squads, and put them in Deep Strike.  Necrons had a unit of 20 warriors, with the overlord, and a re-roll cryptek on the ground, and a unit of 10 troops with immotek on the battlements of the bastion.  (Later he remembered his other unit of troops and walked them onto the board).  He also had the Deathmarks in the flying transports, each squad with 2 crypteks with Abyssal Staffs)

I didn't take pictures of every turn; the first two pictures are the set up.

I scouted my Paladins up (using my Grand Strategy).  It was dark automatically because of Immotek, and his shooting did not do any damage.  I charged up, and teleported both Dread Knights forward and flamed stuff - unfortunately, his overlords with the closest models to both dread knights, so while I got a total of 10 wounds, only 1 of them cleared the 2+ Armor Save.

Turn 2, still night - his lightning doesn't kill anything.  I knew what was coming, so I had spread out my Paladins.  Both of this transports come in, and they drop next to my paladins.  After marking my Paladins with the Deathmarks, he hits my Paladins with the Abyssal Staffs.  Previously, this move had decimated my death starts (Str 8, AP 1 template that targets leadership, but wounds on 2 because of death mark).  Because I was spread out, he got about 3 knights per template, so a total of 6 hits for each of the 2 units).  Draigo took 5 on his Storm Shield, and passed them all.  I lost 1 Paladin on the other side.  I was encouraged, since this could have been the death blow to my small army.
On my turn 2, I deep strike 3 of my combat squads in, which do some shooting, but don't make a huge impact.  My Paladins are set up to charge both units of death marks, but I shoot 1 squad, and obliterate it, so I can't charge.  I charged on of my dread knights into his unit of 20 Necons, and challenge, which he accepts with his overlord.  His cheering section let him re-roll a failed save, and neither of us inflict a would the first round of combat.

Turn 3.  His other death ray comes in, and I let him line up 4 paladins, 3 of which die because of instant death.  On the melee challenge, I inflict 3 wounds, and he fails 1, and the re-reroll.  This causes him to lose by 2, and he fails - and his 20 man warrior squad runs of the table.  My other Dread attacked the Bastion, although I am not sure why I bothered (failed to damage it anyway).  My other combat squad drops in, and hits his transport twice - once with rending, he decides to evade.  My Paladins shoot his other death marks to death.

Turn 4, He comes out of the tower with immotek and warriors, and flys 3 of his flyers off the board (they were out of targets on that side of the board.

I move my dread knight to intercept those coming out of the tower. Between the shooting of a heavy incinerator and the squad that dropped into his corner, I killed 5 warrior before immotek could start blocking
bullets, but Immotecks squad broke, and carried him with them off the board.

Turn 5, nothing special, some shooting, his last squad took the last wound of my dread knight.  I tried to move my SS pictured above to the objective in those ruins, but couldn't make it.  In the end, I had 2 objectives, first blood, warlord, 1 killed heavy and line breaker.  He had 1 objective, kill the warlord, 2 killed heavies.

This might be hard to follow, because I was really tired when I wrote most of it, and it was 2 days later, so I may not have accounted for every death, but the general idea is there.

As far as what learned:
Draigo is a machine, and the Paladins are a rock.  I was worried about putting so many points into one unit, but they took a lot of punishment, and put out so much fire power that they can't be ignored.  I was a little concerned about their lack of speed, but when playing long table edges, giving them scout lets them start shooting on turn 1 (and their shooting was devastating).  I could't test their melee, because they shot everything off the board before charging (this makes me think that maybe I could lower the squad size, and take some more support, but not yet)

The Dread Knights.  I have 3, so I seriously considered taking all 3, and leaving off the Personal Teleporters.   I think for now I am going to keep them.  Being able to get way into enemy deployment zone on turn 1 is great.  I was able to provide threats to take pressure off my Paladins.  Also, when my Strike Squads came in deep, a lot of his shooting resources were tied up (Although this didn't stop him from using his 4 flyers to take out almost 2 squads.  The dreads were my primary anti-tank (rending psycannons is the back up), but based on my attacks on the building, I am still going to struggle with land raiders and other 14 all around vehicles.

The Strike Squads.  I can't really complain.  They took out 1 flyer, they held 2 objectives, and helped shoot a unit off the board.  Being able to deep strike is great.  In 5 man squads, they have decent firepower (especially with psybolt ammo), but they are still marines, and 5 of them get shot up pretty badly in the open.

2000 BA vs Necrons

Same opponent, but this time his necron army.  I took the same list, but dropped 1 extra marine from each dev squad, to buy my sternguard a drop pod (I didn't bring my drop pod, and my opponent didn't have one, so the part of the drop pod will be played by a cherry pepsi can (the only reason I had the extra marines were to add resiliency in purge the alien).

The Necros had
Imotekh
1 Necron Overlord
10 crypek
2 5-man deathmarks
1 18 -man warrior squad
2 5-man warrior squads
2 Night Scythes (for the deathmarks)
2 doom scythes
1 Bastion with a quad gun

Turn 1
Necron - it is night fighting because of Imotekh, and his lightning hits one squad, but they make all of their armor saves.

BA - My drop Pod comes down, with the combat squaded sternguard in.  They land right next to the bastion, and I fail all of my armor saves (he used to intercept quad gun to kill 3 sterngaurd from one of the squads, including both of that squads combi-meltas.  My other meltas did the job though, and collapsed the building.  This is probably one of my biggest mistakes in the game.  I was used to the IG tower pounding my with las cannons, but there was a 5 man squad on top of the bastion, and no one inside.  I should have ignored the tower and concentrated on the troops.

Turn 2 - this is the first picture, as I forgot to take a picture of the set up, although not much moved.  I left a squad on each objective, and then tried to march the other 2 over the contest or claim another objective.  Maybe I am playing too bold, I am definitely playing too bold for this list.

Necrons - His Doom Scythe flies over to the las cannon and pretty much wipes out that squad - since I wasn't right up against the wall, I didn't really have cover from that high up and that close.  I did get a hit first, and a penetrating hit, but I only shook him, which he shrugged off with his living armor.  He dropped off a deathmark squad, and marked the full Combat squad of sterngaurd, and then his 2 abyssal staffs  fried all of them.

BA - Marched across the board.  Didn't have a focused plan really, except to hold my objectives and march over and take him off of his.  I thought I had enough shooting to do it - night fighting kept me from bringing a lot of that power to bear though, and lots of area cover.  My assault squad dropped down near his objective with 5 guys and Imotekh.

End of Turn 2

 Turn 3
Necron - Another Doom Scythe comes and kills some stuff, some more death-marks drop down and melt  stuff (with 2 more Abyssal Staffs).  He shot at, and then assaulted the assault marines with his 5 man squad, + Imotekh and 2 crypteks, and I win by 1 (this was my chance to win - right on his edge of the board, if they would have broke, I would have had warlord and another objective.

BA - This time I lose the melee by one, and I break and run.

Turn 4 -
Necron - He shoots my assault squad to pieces with his abyssal staffs, and removes my last chance to contest.   His fliers tear up stuff (as long as the fact that I something like 8 failed armor saves in a row, but that isn't why I lost, it just caused me to lose faster.

BA - He has first blood and warlord (we decided the building didn't count for first blood, since it is technically terrain).  Night fighting finally ends, but I don't have enough firepower to push past the cover saves and kill him.

Turn 5 - His night scythe and doomscythe kill one of my objective holding tactical squads, and I surrender.

Thoughts - Again, I got crushed.  Again, I think I might just have too many scoring units, because mine are being wiped off the board faster than I can wipe his off the board (and he has a lot fewer than me).  While I made some mistakes in the game, I think my problem started in list building.  The things that killed me (doom scythes, Demolishers, abyssal staffs, are all STR 8+, AP 1, so they would have torn through terminators, FNP, and anything else, so I am not sure.  If I can't generate more fire power, and I can't be more resilient (enough), then maybe I can control the maneuver area (and control where the enemy can apply his firepower).  My opponent asked what about my list made Blood Angels better than Ultra Marines, and it was a good question.  I could have built this exact list with the Ultra Marine Codex (the devs would have cost a little more, but I could have paid from them by not taking the extra bodies).  The point is, by using the blood angel codex, I am giving up options from the vanilla codex, so I if I am not getting something in exchange for those sacrifices, that I am not doing it right.  It's too late right now to really explore my options, but I will be going back to the drawing board to find the balance between troops and awesome killing power.

2000 BA vs Necrons

Our local 40k store, Orbits, has been running escalation tournaments every month.  Since I have been playing for a while, and I have a group of people I already play with, I have not been attending these.  They have recently added monthly 2k tournaments the last Saturday of each month.  I decided to start going to these (prize is store credit, which is always cool).

I ran some training games against one of my normal opponents and, for the first time in a while, got my ass handed to me (I have, obviously lost before, but rarely do I get to turn 4 and agree that there is no point in continuing further).

So I tried some new things in this list:
8 Bikes, with melta attack bike.  (2 Meltaguns, powersword and melta bomb on SGT)
Librarian Epistolary on Bike
Sanguinary Priest on Bike
2 units of Tac Squads in Rhinos (flamer and MM, SGT had PS and Melta Bombs)
1 unit of 10 death company in rhinos (3 guys with power axes and pistols, rest had bolters)
2 units of 10 assault marines (2 flamers, SGT had PS, combat shield, and melta bombs)
2 Whirlwinds

I don't remember all he had, but it was something like
2 units of troops (not immortals) with gaus
2 death mark companies (with characters with some STR 8, AP 1, Instant death flamer template)
2 Transports
1 Death Ray plane
1 Defense Bastion with quad-gun
Other stuff (including HQ) that were irrelevent.
BA Forces
BA Reserves + Stuff in Rhinos

Necron Forces
Necron Reserves.  The transports are wire with lights that turn on and off.

My plan had been to rush everything forward, using the bikes to give my Rhinos cover saves.  Then I was going to unload all 3 rhinos, and shoot 60 bolter shots into an enemy unit.  I really didn't think about what was going to happen next, which is unusual for me.  I didn't even finish the mathhammer to determine how many kills I would get with those 60 bolter shots against different types of armies - maybe I had gotten cocky.  Well, this game  humbled me some, because I made several bad choices, starting with the list.  I know that the tournament, while rolling for set up, only plays "purge the alien" mission.  As I was making my list, I was thinking about strategies for relic, and how many scoring units I could fit - none of which should have been relevant to the list I was supposed to be building (low kill count, awesome kill power).  My second mistake is that, thinking the MSU would give me more fire control, I combat squaded everything - almost doubling the kill points available to my enemy.

Turn 1 BA.  It was night fighting, because of his orb.  I moved bikes up.  My melta attack bike hit his bastion and glanced it (best I could do at 13").  My whirlwinds hit a few guys, all but one of which stood back up.
Turn 1 Necron.  His lightning killed a whirlwind.  He hit my bikes with several ap 1 staff attacks, but they either made the cover save or the feel no pain save every time (I rolled 5+ on 4 of 6 rolls).
BA End of Turn 2

Turn 2 - BA.  I moved my other melta bikes up and shot the building again.  2 hits, no penetrating (even in melta range).  I decided not to assault it, because there was cover, and I didn't want to be groups around the building (at this point, my bikes were invincible, so I didn't want to commit them to taking out a building).  Two combat squads (other 2 failed even with DoA re-roll) of my assault marines drop down and flame some stuff, most of which gets back up (he had a res orb)
Turn 2 - BA. Game ends (not officially, but pretty much).  My warlord power made him subtract one from his reserve rolls, so only 1 death mark unit comes in.  It lands next to my bikes, marks them, and then flames them with something that ignores cover, is AP 1, and causes instant death - they are also str 8 vs leadership, but the deathmark makes them wound on a 2+ anyway - so most of my bikes melt away.  His lightning pops the other red rhino, and both Combat squads fail their leadership and become pinned.  His shooting also killed some bikes and some assault marines.

Turn 3 - BA.   Since I can't engage his deathmarks because my tactical marines are pinned (and I wasn't going to charge with the bikes - I assumed they would still get their overwatch of instant doom). I hold my bikes back (just my librarian and 2 bikes, and only because they were out of flamer template range).  My other jump marines come down and flame some troops, all but one of which gets back up.  I also move my death company up and unload them - shooting into the death marks.
Turn 3 - Necrons.  The Deathray flyer comes on, the transport that delivered the deathmarks flies off the board.  The death ray kills 2 bikes, and some death company, and some tactical marines.  He starts to pull one of his units of troops around the bastion.

Turn 4 - BA.  Moved my librarian around bastion to team up with lone jump marine in that squad.  At this point, the only way I can not lose is to clear the table, so there is no point in playing conservative and trying to save points.   In assault I kill the death marks, and some necrons that came out of the bastion.
Just before assault of BA turn 4.

Turn 4 Necrons.  His other death marks came on, killed the librarian, the assault marine, the death company, and a bunch of tactical marines, and we called the game.
Start of Necron turn 4, before shooting phase.

1500 BA v Necrons

Right after my battle against the orks, I played the same list against necrons (same player, different army)

1 Libby in Termie armor with a stormshield,
 Brother Corbulo,
a Stormraven,
a 5 man dev squad with 4 missile launchers,
1 assault squad (2 flamers and sgt had twin plasma pistols and a melta bomb),
2 tac squads with MM and flamer,
and 6 assault termies (3 with TH/SS and 3 with 2 claws).

I don't know necron stuff as well, but he  basically had
2 groups of 20 gaus troops (each with some character - one the game him a re-roll per phase, and one with some cool shoota weapon and a 1 time use weapon, which I'm going to call the arrow of Str 10 of doom (but i think it was something like tachayon arrow),
2 units of immortals in flyers, with 1 character each.

We did Crusade, and it was the diagnol set up, orks went first, and deployed 1 unit of necrons in each of his 2 big ruins (1 objective in each).  I set my guys up in a ruin, like my assault termies to run across the board, and place 1 unit of tac termies so that it could go after the other objective, which I put further away.  When we rolled for objectives, but of his were skyfire - neither of mine mattered.  I put Brother C with the devastators, because I was so afraid of his flyers, and I wanted to make sure my missile launchers lasted long enough to make a difference.
Turn 1 - I don't think he moved or shot this turn, he might of moved 1-2 inches in the ruins.  I moved terminators out toward middle, and the tac marines toward my further objective.  His warlord skill let him pick night-fighting, which he did (I think it was just so he wouldn't worry about having to shoot in the dark later.

Turn 2 Necron - His flyers came on.  He dropped 1 unit off near my whirlwind, but the unit barely got around the rock, and had to snapshot, so no damage to whirlwind.  He moves around in the ruins a little more.  He shoots into my devastators and kills 3 of them (Brother C can't work his magic, since he was positioned to take shots from the front, and not the side).

Turn 2 BA - My flyer comes on, and unloads everything into the transport that hasn't unloaded yet, and destroys it, unfortunately his flyer crashed into my whirlwind, and removed my missile launcher.  I shoot a missile at the remaining transport, and actually get a hit.  My assault marines jet pack in and do 0 wounds to once of the necron groups in the ruins (I am claiming a moral victory anyway, since this is the first time in 3 games that my Sgt didn't die from "gets hot" on the drop.)

Turn 3 Necron - He zooms his flyer to shoot my tac squad.  Since my whirlwind has no weapon, his immortal squad reverses direction, and starts heading around the rock toward my middle objective.  He shoots my terminators, and kills 2 or 3.  He shoots the assault marines, and reduce them to 4.  Since his other transport is gone, he has to roll reserves on his immortal squad, they do not come on.

Turn 3 BA - Still advancing tactical marines and assault terminators.  I jump the assault marines into a ravine about 13" from his squad (my plan was to keep them hidden in cover until my assault terminators get into charge range, then popping out and taking the overwatch shots.  Since my flyer had to jink to dodge his "arrow of Str 10 doom", I turned 90 degrees and flew off his edge of the board

Turn 4 Necrons - His immortals come on between my assault squad and his troops, and shoot my up, killing 2 marines.  He unloads both troop choices into my assault terminators, and reduces me to my librarian, and 1 TH/SS terminator.  The immortals he has on my side move toward the middle (getting close to charge range on the tac squad there).  The squad is only 6 strong, but they have a royal court guy, so I get a little nervous.

Turn 4 BA - Not wanting to give up the warlord point, and realizing that my assault terminators were no longer combat effective, I started to retreat them.  I lined up my whirlwind for a tank shock on the immortal squad on my side of the board.  My Stormraven came back on, and I unloaded into his immortal squad (the one bothering my assault terminators.  I only killed 3 of 6 immortals / characters, but there really was no better target - did I forget to mention he flew his transport off the board on his turn 4?  The tactical squad on the border objective fire at his necron troops, but don't kill any of them.  He says I shouldn't have drawn attention to them, because he forgot they were there (although it was a good thing because...

Necron Turn 5 ... He starts shooting at my tactical squad with everything he has (including the transport that came back on).  He killed 5 of them, and made them break and run 9", but that means he didn't shoot at my librarian (warlord).  He also moves his immortal squad backwards to finish off my whirlwind.  Which at the time, I thought was a mistake, because the whole game I thought those immortals would tear up my tactical squad, he said something about a lightning field, so I was afraid of him attacking the middle tactical squad (I guess his psycological warfare was stronger than mine)

Turn 5 BA - I run my librarian further from his side (I am pretty sure I am out of 24" at this point, but I didn't measure because I didn't want to draw attention to my librarian in case the game lasted another turn or two.  My edge tactical squad rallied (ATSKNF) and moved back onto the objective.  My Stormraven zoomed over and killed his last transport - which crashed somewhere off the board.  My jump pack marines jumped over his immortal squad, and then ran into the middle of his deployment zone (a risky move, that would have been suicide if the game hadn't ended.)

I won, with 1 point for first kill (his transport) and 1 for have a scoring squad in his deployment zone.  We both had 6 points worth of objectives.

Overall, I don't think this list is working for me.  Even though I won both games with it, it was an uphill battle the whole time (if either game had gone past 5 turns, I would have lost both games, and maybe even been tabled).  If the necrons had marched across the board, I do not think I would have had the fire power to stop them from rolling me.  The stormraven killed both of his flyers, but partly because he didn't care - he didn't see it as a big enough threat to waste shots on, unless there were no other targets (and other than the 2 transports, it killed 4 necron immortals).  Likewise - I think his transports killed a total of 4 devastors, and 2 marines, so had I not been able to shoot them down... I don't know. Marching the Terminators across the board does not work without Brother C, but Brother C only helps if you can control what side they are shooting at ( a mobile army can take advantage of this)
